Reducing the threat of unexploded ordnance
Australia will contribute A$2.7 million to help Laos reduce the threat posed by unexploded ordnance (UXO), including cluster munitions.
Funds will be channelled through the new UXO sector trust fund and will be used to support and strengthen the operations of UXO Lao and the National Regulatory Authority.
This contribution will also assist Laos to host the first meeting of States Parties to the Convention on Cluster Munitions in November this year.
This new initiative builds on A$16.5 million in support from Australia for UXO action in Laos since 1996.
The new funding was announced by Mr Stephen Smith, Australia’s Foreign Minister on 4 April – the International Day for Mine Awareness and Action. New funding was also announced for mine awareness and action in Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon.
Landmines, cluster munitions and other explosive remnants of war pose a real threat in many countries, harming and killing innocent civilians and delaying development.
Through our Mine Action Strategy announced in November 2009, Australia continues to support affected developing countries, particularly in the Asia Pacific region.
