Australia supports animal and forestry management in Laos

Australian scientists will work with Lao scientists to prevent the spread of animal diseases and improve the management of high-value forestry species in Laos. Agreements for two new projects, funded through the Australian Government’s Official Development Assistance Program were signed between the Lao Ministries of Education and Agriculture and Forestry, and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR).

The projects will help build the capacity of Lao farming communities and scientists to improve agricultural productivity in two important sectors, animal health and smallholder agroforestry. Both projects will help smallholder farmers increase productivity, contributing to rising standards of health, education and social status.

The project ‘Best practice health and husbandry of cattle and buffalo’ will work directly with farmers to improve knowledge of the cattle supply chain and use this in improving animal health, husbandry and marketing initiatives. A best practice approach to improving livestock productivity will be introduced to farmers, as well as government and other livestock programs.

The second project ‘Enhancing on-farm incomes through improved management of teak and paper mulberry plantations in Luang Prabang Province’ will introduce new management practices for smallholders growing teak. Teak is a high-value tree grown in many areas of northern Laos without any management to improve growth. The introduction of better tree management practices, together with genetic improvement programs will help increase productivity. These practices will also integrate the use of paper mulberry in conjunction with teak.
