Australia Awards Applications Open Online
Australia continues to invest in Laos’ human resource development with 30 new tertiary scholarships planned for the 2019 intake of the Australia Awards in Laos.
Applications for the intake will open on 1 February 2018, and two information sessions will be held in Vientiane to answer questions on the Awards, and explain the online application system that will be used for the first time.
When announcing the scholarships, Ms Sophie Wilkinson, Second Secretary of the Australian Embassy, said this year’s successful Australia Award recipients will be high-achieving Lao men and women with a vision for achieving positive change in a sector critical to Laos’ development.
“Laos continues to face skills shortages in specialist areas like education, innovation and entrepreneurship, community development, agriculture, natural resources management, science and technology,” Ms Wilkinson said. “The Australia Awards scholarships target potential leaders in these fields for higher education, and ensure recipients will return home to Laos with the skills, ideas and networks they need to make significant contribution to achieving the nation’s socio-economic development goals.”
For the first time, the Australia Awards in Laos will be accepting applications through an online system only, and potential applicants are encouraged to attend one of two upcoming information sessions to understand the new requirements. The general public are invited to an information session on 10 February 2018 at the Muong Thanh Hotel; while government agencies are invited to attend on 9 February 2018, also at the Muong Thanh Hotel. A special information session will be conducted for representatives of Disabled People’s Organisations on the 8th of February at the Laos Australia Institute Office. The closing date for the online application submission is 31 March 2018. Applicants who do not have access to the internet or have a disability should contact the LAI Office to discuss how they can get support with their application
Ms Wilkinson also encouraged potential applicants to visit the Australia Awards Laos website (www.australiaawardslaos.org), and follow the Australia in Laos Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/australiainlaos/), for further details on the Awards and Information Sessions, and tips for submitting a successful application. “People with a disability, women and people from provincial areas are particularly encouraged to apply, and can access special assistance,” she added.
The Australia Awards are prestigious scholarships funded by the Australian Government that respond to human resource development needs jointly identified by Laos and Australia. Successful applicants receive a comprehensive package of support to study in Australia, including additional English language training where required, and join an Australian alumni network of over 1,200 people on return to Laos.
