Australian Humanitarian Assistance for Attapeu flood victims
On behalf of the Australian Government, the Australian Embassy in Vientiane, and the Australian people, the Australian Ambassador to Laos H.E. Mr Jean Bernard Carrasco wishes to offer his sincere condolences and sympathy to the people of Laos affected by the dam incident and subsequent flooding in Sanamxay district. “Our thoughts go to all those affected by the dam incident and subsequent flooding in Attapeu” said Ambassador Carrasco.
The Australian Government is providing humanitarian relief, following a request for assistance from the Government of Laos, to help respond to the devastation caused by the collapse of the dam in Attapeu province. On 27 and 29 July, two Royal Australian Air Force C-17A Globemaster aircrafts landed at Pakse International Airport, Champasak province, delivering much needed humanitarian aid. In total, over 6,000 items have been delivered, including tents to keep families warm and dry, kitchen kits, bed nets, hygiene kits, water purification tabs, blankets, and sleeping mats. The flight also included dignity kits and clean birthing kits to support 1,350 women and girls. The second Royal Australian Air Force aircrafts that landed in Pakse was also able to bring 3,500 mosquito nets transported on behalf of the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance.
“This will help about 850 families, or around 4,000 people, in need of urgent assistance” explained Ambassador Carrasco, who added that Australia’s response “is particularly targeted towards meeting the needs of women and girls who are often the most vulnerable in times of crisis”. Australia is now working with the Lao Government, provincial and district authorities, and partners such as WFP and UNFPA to ensure that these items reach affected communities in Attapeu province as soon as possible. The Australian Embassy is also working with the Lao Government and partners to determine what further assistance might be required in the coming days, weeks and months.
Australia and Laos have a long and close friendship built over 66 years of unbroken diplomatic ties. Our relationship is underpinned by close people-to-people links, strong business ties and a development cooperation program of around $42 million a year.
