Launch of Sonthana Project – to preserve Lao Literature and Art
Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, thank you from the at set for the opportunity to join you today for the launch of an excellent initiative - Sonthana - to help promote and preserve Lao literature, art and culture.
I pay tribute, first of all, to the Association for the Promotion and Preservation of Art and Literature for taking forward the Sonthana project and for three inspiring women, Sounantha, Rachel and Thiane, for their creativity and hard work in pioneering the Sonthana project.
Their leadership, in the week we have celebrated international women's day, is I believe, another poignant reminder that societies that prosper are those best able to tap into the potential of ideas of their people, irrespective of gender and irrespective of issue like ethnicity, faith nationality or physical ability.
Which brings me to my main point - a strong literary tradition is not a luxury for a poor developing country like the Lao PDR
Promoting and preserving Laos' art and literature is a foundation, a building block on which Laos will prosper.
This is a remarkably young country, the Lao PDR, with half the population, I believe, under 25.
That's a substantial asset, In terms of a vast potential future workforce, if Lao schools can deliver the numeracy and literacy skills the next generations need to succeed in any line of work.
But right now the school system in Laos is not delivering for its future generations.
It's a sector education, where Australia has been active, and where Australia remains committed to working with Lao officials, teachers and school communities, over the long term, to strengthen basic education.
But it starts in the home. It starts with the vital role of mothers - and fathers – in reading and telling stories to their children.
That's my message for every parent, and for all Lao fathers in particular. The best investment you can make in your children's future is, I believe, to share with them a love of books. A love of reading.
Initiatives like the Sonthana project are an excellent platform for us all to embrace and highlight this important message.
I thank Sounantha, Rachel and Thiane again for their leadership with Sonthana, and I look forward to this afternoon's discussion.
