Handover Ceremony of Australian Equipment to Lao Police

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am delighted this afternoon to be able to officially hand over to our friends in the Lao police equipment from the Australian Federal Police which we trust will be useful in your work to combat domestic and cross-border crime.
This equipment is part of a package of assistance from Australia, that included support for the recent participation by senior Lao police in a law enforcement conference in Bangkok on the threat posed across South-East Asia by outlaw motorcycle gangs.
These criminal gangs have established a presence already across the border in Thailand. They pose a potential threat to all countries in the region, through their involvement in the drugs trade, money laundering and associated criminal activities.
Only through close police cooperation across borders will we be able together to address the threat posed by these gangs.
The AFP is committed to continuing to support the Lao police through ongoing English language training and our Asian Region Law Enforcement Management Program.
Additionally, we hope this equipment gifted today will be of practical help to the Lao police - desktop and laptop computers, video cameras and CCTV equipment, photocopiers and helmets, to the value of 20,000 AUD or around LAK 130 million.
Australia looks forward to continuing our ongoing law enforcement cooperation with the Lao PDR
