Lao Start-Up and Entrepreneurship Conference

Lao Start-Up and Entrepreneurship Conference

31 August 2016, Vientiane

Mr Daovone Phachanthavong, Vice President of the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, budding young entrepreneurs, other distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen.

I think it was US business magnate Warren Buffett who advised you should never invest in a business you can’t understand.  [English only – his famous quote is to “beware geeks bearing formulas”.]

Selling a business idea – even a really great business idea – to potential investors is never easy, I don’t think.

How do you share your vision so they can not only fully understand it, but also get excited about your dream, want to help shape it, and perhaps even begin to own the idea themselves?

I am delighted to be with you this morning at an event that was pitched to me as a celebration of entrepreneurship and startups.

Australia is proud to be supporting business development across the lower Mekong region, in a number of ways.

Here in Laos, for example, Australia is supporting the development of micro-finance institutions and village banks, and the roll out of digital financial services.

And through the Mekong Business Initiative, or MBI, in collaboration with the Asian Development Bank, Australia is working to empower young entrepreneurs to build the knowledge and networks they need to develop their businesses and their ideas.

Australia is prioritising business development globally in our aid program, because we know private sector growth is the most effective way of promoting genuine and sustainable economic development and making real inroads into poverty.

And we are doing so in a way that supports the economic empowerment of women.

I am sure we would all agree that ensuring half a country’s population have the same opportunities to reach their full potential as the other half is vital for every country’s development and prosperity.

We’re excited about today, and welcome your active participation in today’s forum as we look at the environment in Laos for startups, and ideas on how we can improve this.

A particular welcome to our “angel” investors from Laos and from overseas.

Thank you for dedicating your time, and sharing your knowledge and ideas, to enable the young entrepreneurs in this room to realise their ambitions and dreams.

Once again, Australia is proud to be supporting this initiative, and looks forward to the impact this program will make here in Laos in support of smart, savvy entrepreneurship.

Good luck to you all!
