AUSTRALIA SUPPORTING H1N1 VACCINATION EFFORTS IN LAO PDR

Australia is supporting H1N1 prevention through a contribution of vaccines to Lao PDR. The Australian donation, which was officially handed over to the Lao PDR Ministry of Health today, amounts to over 600,000 doses of the vaccine. This donation is among the first in a commitment by the Australian Government to provide up to 10 per cent of Australian pandemic vaccines for use by Australia’s neighbours.

In making this donation, Australia is contributing to international efforts to support the World Health Organization (WHO) in ensuring that sufficient pandemic vaccines are distributed to where they are most needed. In doing so we are recognising the many challenges developing countries face in accessing vaccines. Vaccines are one of the most valuable ways to protect people during influenza epidemics and pandemics.

The Ministry of Health will now work closely with the World Health Organisation to ensure that these vaccines are delivered to vulnerable groups in Lao PDR.
