Australia awarded 64 scholarships for Provincial Students to study at NUOL

The Australian Government awarded sixty-four scholarships to provincial students to study at the National University of Laos, at an award ceremony held on campus at the University last week.

Over 400 scholarships have been awarded to provincial students since the Ausaid program commenced in 1997.

According to Michael Hassett, First Secretary of AusAID, ‘The Australian Government believes supporting education in Lao PDR is a priority, as human resource development is essential for broad based economic and social growth. In the education sector, the Australian Government supports primary education, strengthened management of the education sector, and has an extensive and well-regarded Australian Scholarships program’.

Provincial scholarships are just one part of Australia’s broader 6 million dollar (Australian or US$?) annual scholarships program. Australian Scholarships include the Australian Development Scholarships program, which sends 40 scholars annually to Australia to study at world class Australian higher education institutions.

The provincial scholarships provide recipients with good opportunities to gain access to higher education in Laos. They provide students from rural and remote areas with skills and training to contribute to on-going development in Laos. The scholarships include English language training, providing recipients with further opportunities to expand their studies beyond Laos.

The provincial scholarships target students who show promise at high school level but are not able to gain access to higher education due to their social-economic disadvantage or remoteness. The scholarships support gender equity as they are offered on an equal basis to boys and girls. The scholarships cover the first two years of study and include monthly stipends, accommodation, university administration fees and English language training.

Attendees at the ceremony included Vice President for Student Affairs of NUOL, Associate Professor Lammai Phiphakhavong, and First Secretary of AusAID, Mr. Michael Hassett.
